Knowing Your Friends

We’ve just passed the 39th anniversary of one of the worst Supreme Court decisions that has resulted in the deaths of more than 50 million innocent Americans and gutted an entire generation. On the heels of the Roe vs. Wade anniversary, the Obama Administration once again proves it is no friend to families or to women.
Late last week, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius announced that under Obamacare, all US employers, except churches and other places of worship, must provide complete coverage for contraception for their female employees. This includes sterilization and the abortion-inducing drug RU-486, often called the “morning after” drug. The Administration also denied a request from religious leaders to broaden the exemption to the law that would have included all faith-based organizations such as Catholic hospitals, universities and service organizations such as Catholic Charities.
Basically, they have 13 months to comply, or face stiff penalties from the government that could potentially force many of them to close down. These are the kinds of organizations who work tirelessly to help the poor and downtrodden, the very people Obama claims to be a champion for. The same administration who has been giving exemptions left and right to Obamacare for his union cronies and the like is pretty much telling Catholic organizations to suck it up and deal with it, even though to comply means going against their moral beliefs regarding contraception and abortion.
Leaders of the Catholic Church across the land expressed their outrage at this decision, which was announced just a day after the Pope had warned visiting American bishops of “grave threats” to the religious freedom of all Americans due to the “radical secularism” of our political and cultural leaders who are “increasingly hostile to Christianity”.  Last Sunday, many local priests read a letter from their bishops to their parishioners stating, “We cannot- we must not- comply with this unjust law. People of faith cannot be made second class citizens…Our parents and grandparents did not come to these shores to help build America’s cities and towns, its infrastructure and institutions, its enterprise and culture, only to have their posterity stripped of their God given rights.” The letter asks Catholics to fast, pray and contact their representatives to get an amendment that would exempt Catholic employers from the mandate.
Time will tell whether or not Catholic voters, who gave 54% of their support to Obama in 2008 (compared to 45% for McCain)*, will remember this come November and hold him accountable for his assault on the First Amendment (among many others in my opinion). Or, will they continue to hope for change, as all Friends Of Barack Obama (FOBO’s) do. It’s time for people of all faiths to stand together at this time, because sooner or later, they come for all of us.
Speaking of FOBO’s, Occupy Providence (RI) protesters did their part to voice their disdain for Catholics and the pro-life movement. Bored with protesting corporate greed and, you know, whatever, a group of occupiers and a bunch of abortion advocates infiltrated a pro-life rally being held at the Rhode Island state capitol building. Rhode Island Right to Life Executive Director Barth Bracy told Fox News, “their rally had to be cut short after the Occupiers began screaming and refused to allow a Catholic priest to deliver a prayer.”
But that wasn’t the only thing they did…at the rally attended mostly by senior citizens, moms with young children and school kids, one occupier thought it would be cool to go up into a third floor balcony and dump condoms on a group of Catholic school girls.
Now that’s real class…and these are your friends, Mr. President. You’ve said so yourself.
